Let’s talk about the Protomen

You all probably notice I talk about these guys a lot:

Your typical response if you don’t listen to them might be “who the hell are these guys?” Or as I have gotten before “I want to listen to the protomen based off of what you’ve shown me, but where do I start?”

Knowing nothing about the protomen, you can start where I started:

Listen to this. Let it put some pep in your step, and let it energize you. Real nice song you want to dance to, right? Listen to the lyrics. Feel free to pause it whenever you’d like, and listen to this:

Same deal. This song just feels great, right? Are you paying attention to the lyrics? Pause whenever you’re comfortable. I’m going to give you one more song before the big reveal. We’re going to bring it up a notch:

So what we’ve gotten so far is some real nice rock music with an 80s flavor as well as country and ska. The lyrics talk about murder, getting out of where ever the singer is, and then rebellion. Sounds pretty rad, right?

The music you just listened to is a rock opera based around this guy:

That’s right. Megaman.

The Hounds? Dr. Wily turning the city against Dr. Light by framing him for the murder of his wife with the robot they built together. Breaking out? Joe (i.e. sniper joe) laments to his girl friend he’s tired of living an oppressed society where Wily has, at this point, taken over. Light up the Night? Joe and Dr. Light lay siege to the tower that Wily uses to control the city in an attempt to free everyone.

All. About. Megaman.

This is the second album. The first album takes place afterwards where Dr. Light again tries to save the city by building Protoman. After his death at the hands of Wily, he builds Megaman. This time raising him as a normal son having given up on the people that turned on him and let his first son die. Megaman rebels against Dr. Light and decides he has to fight Wily. Leading to finding out that Protoman is still alive, and has turned on the people who let him die.

They made a rock opera that is about megaman, and is not only good as far as video game music goes, but is exceptional regardless of it’s genre. Listen to them:

Some of us are trying to decipher the lyrics. Also we don’t have a title yet but a friend is calling it Hold Back The Night.

Spoilers

Preliminary comments without knowing the lyrics;

Sounds closer to something we’d hear in Act 1, which is interesting. Cool that they are returning to that sort of feel for Act 3, or something similar.

Even though I didn’t know the lyrics it felt like I should, like this is THEIR song and will FIT.

Also, comparing it to the recently posted Breaking Out First Performance- this feels so much more solid. They know the sound, they know the song, they know the theme, they know the tone they want. So cool to see how they’ve grown.

Also YAY GAMBLER SONG EEEEEEE

One of the motifs had a note that off. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

Regardless, this was fantastic.
